Last updated: patch 3.2

Interested in starting raiding with your balance druid but not sure what kind of gear you should have? Then this post is for you. First few pointers:

- I will list 3-5 items for each slot and where you can get them. Items from patch 3.2 included.

- These are not all possible items you can use – only few selected ones that I feel are most viable.

- Only items obtained from 5 mans, crafting (BoE) and reputations are included. It is a pre-raiding guide after all.

- I know you can buy all kinds of stuff with Emblems of Triumph but for someone who is just beginning to raid getting those with just daily dungeon quest will take very long time so I am excluding them from this post.

- I will also exclude tier items bought with emblems lower than Conquest. For those you would have to downgrade your Conquest emblems and those are far better saved for higher level tier items. I would suggest downgrading emblems only when there is not a better item available with higher item level.

- Ebonweave vs. Spellweave items. Great items but they are very expensive and with all the purples falling from heavens into your lap you probably would replace them very soon. I’ve listed Ebonweave ones in the guide but you should not think about getting them unless you really need the hit. Or maybe if you’re rich. Actually this goes for all crafted epic items: save your money unless you really badly need the particular item.

- PvP items are also left out because they sacrifice too much DPS stats for defensive ones. However if you got some PvP item which is better than something in your PvE gear then by all means use it. But even if so PvP items are a temporary solution only.

- Your first priority is to get to the hit cap, after that you can go for the (soft) haste cap and finally crit. What items you ultimately end up using is totally up to how much time you can invest and even luck. All items are good choises as long as you follow the hit > haste > crit rule.

- Since you’re starting to build raiding gear from scratch you might have mana problems. Haste increases the amount of mana used while crit gives you mana. So if it seems you have mana issues feel free to favor crit over haste. Hit cap is something you absolutely must have – haste can wait a little longer if needed.

- Hit cap is 263 if you have (and you should have) Balance of Power and Improved Fearie Fire.

- Soft haste cap is 400 and after that you will gain more DPS with crit. There is nothing wrong in having more haste but thanks to the changes made for Eclipse in 3.2 you will be switching between Wrath and Starfire more and hence crit gains more value.

Yesterday us on the European servers got the patch too. Most of the servers came up as scheduled but it took me maybe couple hours before I could actually login. Stuck on authenticating / retrieving character list etc.

I did try the new 5man on heroic mode and I have to say it wasn’t as bad as I had thought. Not saying it got me super excited but it was ok. The idea of gladiator type arena sounds fun and I think they did ok with it. However the mounted combat is something I am not very excited about so I’m glad it was only on a small role. What comes to the raid version I won’t be able to try it out for another week or so since my guild is currently on a summer break from raiding. Looking forward to it though. And the loot from the new instances seem to be really nice – should make many people happy.

3.2 was a huge patch for balance druids. I am looking at you Eclipse. Have to admit I got some problems adjusting to the new system… as I was playing yesterday and today I still keep slipping in to the old Lunar rotation and then wondering why Solar suddenly proced. But the new system is great, absolutely great. Can’t wait to see it in action in a raid.

Another great thing for balance druids is the new Idol of Lunar Fury. Thanks to the new Eclipse a more ‘general’ idol far out weights the old Starfire specific idol. At least for now the idol seems to have rather high procrate and no cooldown so you can expect it to be up almost constantly. Let’s just hope they won’t change it. You can buy the idol with 25 Emblem of Triumph and it should be every balance druids first priority. Keep doing those daily dungeon quests.

Past week or so I’ve been working on getting my first guides done and I’ve deliberately waited with those until 3.2 was here so I could see all the changes. First up will be a pre-raid gear guide for balance druids, followed by a talent guide and well.. we’ll see. Expect those to be up at some point next week.

On a lighter side of the patch fun we did get some new small pets. An orphan matron near the Dalaran water fountain offers you either Wolvar or Oracle orphan to quest with and eventually awarding you either Curious Oracle Hatchling or Curious Wolvar Pup. I got the Oracle one and he is the cutest thing ever. Another new pet you can easily get is the Obsidian Hatchling and you can buy it from Breanni at Dalaran pet shop. Thanks to these two I finally got my Lil’ Game Hunter achievement and the cute little fawn. Yeee!

There was one thing they changed what really really REALLY made me dance and run around the house out of joy. The Brewfest achievement Have Keg, Will Travel no longer requires you to actually have a Brewfest mount. I can’t put it into words how relieved I am. I’ve done all the achievements so far for the What A Long, Strange Trip It’s Been but this particular one has given me headaches and horror scenarios. Now I can relax and wait for the Brewfest and my shiny Violet Proto-Drake. What remains to be seen is do they keep it as 310% mount or drop it to 280%. We’ll see.. but I am going to enjoy it no matter what the speed is. Although 310% Swift Flight Form sounds kinda nice.

Other than that nope not much. See you next week.
